Psalms 61: 1 – 3

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For you have been my refuge,
a strong tower against the foe.

REFLECTION

One thing I have learnt from David is to call upon the name of the Lord. Through out the book of Psalms there are so many verses that bring him out turning to God for help. He refers to God as his refuge, his shelter, his shield and his help. This is the basic attitude that helped David in his leadership. The bible in 1 Samuel 13:14 refers to David as a man after the heart of God.

This David was able to handle a bear, a lion and Goliath at a very tender age (17 years). Women sang after he had killed Goliath “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” How many of us can kill a lion alone? How many times are we afraid? David told Goliath I am coming to you in the name of the Lord whose army you have defied. He knew his God well through prayer. I love this part “From the end of the earth I will cry to You”; it shows commitment in seeking help from God. It is either God hears or hears.

“when my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. How many times do we try solving a problem from the level we created it? How many times do we go to the same friends we talk to when things go wrong? David asked God to lead him to a rock that is higher than him, when his heart is overwhelmed. He needed to see things from a different angle. When you are higher you see things from aerial point of view and you are able to pass a better judgment. I don’t know what is overwhelming you, may God lead you to a rock higher than you. Jesus is a rock higher than us, his servants are rocks higher than us and the bible is also a rock higher than us. God will lead you to the right rock through prayers.

I challenge you to be a David of this generation. You will find refuge in God and a strong tower against your foes.

PRAYER

Oh Lord, I come before you this morning. Give me a heart that is after you like David. Be my shield, my strength and my refuge.

When my heart is overwhelmed lead me to the rock that is higher than I. This I pray in Jesus name, amen.
