I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you

Luke 10:19

You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

Psalms 91:13

Reflection

As I write about this scripture, I feel I have a better understanding than when I first read it. The fact that the devil entered the serpent and went to tempt Eve is more practical than just a representation. I had initially thought it was a once-off business or imagery, but I now know better. When praying for people, we see a lot in the spiritual realm.

The devil is continuously using other creatures to accomplish his mission against the believers. I do not intend to scare you but to bring you to the truth.

I have remembered a song we used to sing when in Sunday school, “The devil doesn’t have a body if you want to give him yours you can give him, but he will only use you….”

When the scripture talks about treading upon the serpents, scorpions and lions mean treading on the devil; evil powers. I love the addition, “overcome all powers of the enemy, and nothing will harm you.” This affirms our authority if you tread on them, and they harm you back, it means your authority is being challenged. We need to continually remind the devil that he has no authority to harm us.

The enemy tries to counterattack (harm) us after the warfare, and you should remember to remind him it is against God’s word. I do not know if you have ever prayed for something then got an accident immediately? That’s what we call counterattack. You need to quote the whole scripture as you crush the head of evil serpent and scorpion.

When I left campus, I stayed for a long time without a decent job, and we used to sell mobile sim cards on the street with my sister. It was not easy. Persuading Kenyans to buy the then Airtel lines was a toll. The company had changed hands more than thrice, and it looked like a failure. Our competitor, Safaricom, was thriving every day, and a vast number were subscribers. We depended on those sales for food, transport, rent, and virtually any other bill. After a long wait and search, I stopped asking God to give me a job and started fighting the powers sitting on my job. As I continued waging war, I began to get leads to a quality control department job. One Monday evening when I had gone for intercessors night vigil, our then leader prayed against counterattack; as she was praying, I wondered, is that necessary? We have the authority, and that’s all that we need. The meeting ended, and it was time to leave. For whatever reason, I was the last one to leave the church building that day. I was to report to start my attachment at the place where I wanted the employment after the vigil. When I was leaving, I hit my thumb on the door as I was closing it. It was so painful that I lost my fingernail. I reported to work with a swollen thumb, and immediately I was hit; it clicked on my mind “counterattack.” I learned the meaning of what I had questioned as our intercessory leader was praying.

Let us exercise our authority and destroy every work of the enemy. If we do not destroy him, he will destroy us, our family, and our loved ones. Not on our watch! Let us arise and do our part; that’s why God equips us.

PRAYER

Oh Lord God Almighty, I come before your throne to ask for mercy and grace to be able to exercise my authority against all evil powers. Teach me to wage war and enforce your will in my life, my family, our nation, and in the body of Christ. This I pray in Jesus’ name.
